A lot of songwriters try to force bridges into songs when the song doesn’t need it or don’t write a bridge for a song that could really use one. Just as a suspended chord is for creating a bit of tension or contrast to the expected chord sound, a bridge serves the same purpose in a song. Like I said, some songs don’t need a bridge. In my opinion, it’s best to write a song without the expectation of using a bridge and make the rest of it be the best you can. Only then, should you try adding a bridge if you feel the song is still missing something. If you feel you should write a bridge though, then Gary Ewer has some great tips on writing one over at his blog. Be sure to go give it a read.
