It used to be where a “successful” musician was defined as someone touring the world and making lots of money. That also meant typically that the artist or band was signed with a record label. Fortunately, times have changed since then. Nowadays, unsigned independent artists are able to make as much as some signed artists. There are even some unsigned artists selling millions of songs without help from any record labels.
